Appointments
Most requests are dealt with without an appointment. Tell us what you need and we will arrange the right thing.
What do you need?
| If you need | Do this |
|---|---|
| Help with a new or worsening problem | Send an online request. This is the fastest way to be assessed. |
| Something administrative A letter, a form, a query about your record | Send an online request and choose the admin option. |
| A routine appointment Smear, vaccination, review | Book in the NHS App, or call 01942 366947. |
| Urgent help today | Send an online request before 11am, or call 01942 366947. |
Urgent or routine?
Urgent means it cannot wait: a problem that has got much worse, or that you are worried about today. Send these before 11am so a clinician can plan the day.
Routine means it can wait a few days: a longstanding problem, a review, or something you want to discuss. We reply within one working day.
What happens after you send a request
- A clinician reads your request. Usually this is the same day.
- We may contact you by phone or text to ask more, arrange an appointment, or send advice.
- If you have not heard by the end of the next working day, call us.
Before you contact us
Some problems are better dealt with elsewhere, often faster:
- A pharmacist can treat sore throats, earache, sinusitis, impetigo, shingles, infected bites and urine infections.
- NHS physiotherapy takes self-referrals for back, joint and muscle pain.
- Wigan Talking Therapies takes self-referrals for anxiety and low mood. Call 01942 764449.
- Check your referral before ringing about a hospital appointment.
- NHS 111 online if you are not sure what you need.
Home visits
Home visits are for people who are terminally ill, bedbound, or severely ill and cannot be moved. We do not visit because of transport problems or because someone lives in a care home.
Please ask before 10am. A clinician will ring you first to decide whether a visit is needed, or whether advice, a nurse, or an appointment at the surgery is better. Babies and small children should be brought to the surgery, where we will see them promptly.
No patient who definitely needs a home visit will be refused.
Sick notes (fit notes)
If you are off work for 7 days or less, you can self-certify. You do not need to see a GP. Use the government self-certification form (SC2).
If you are off for more than 7 days, or your employer asks for a fit note, send us a request. Please do not book an urgent appointment for a fit note. If you were in hospital, the ward issues your fit note for the whole recovery.
Join the surgery
You can register online if you live in our practice area. You will need your NHS number if you have it.
Cancelling an appointment
If you cannot come, please tell us as soon as possible so the appointment can go to someone else. Cancel in the NHS App, or call 01942 366947.
